Jurgen Klopp believes Liverpool’s participation in the Audi Cup will be the perfect preparation for the 2017/18 season.
The Reds boss, who was beamed into the Munich launch of the competition by hologram from Melwood, is relishing the return to his homeland.
Liverpool will play two matches at the Allianz Arena on August 1 and 2. European heavyweights Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid will also take part with AC Milan likely to complete the quartet. The Serie A outfit’s involvement currently depends on their Europa League qualifying commitments.
“With this tournament coming 12 or 14 days before our season starts it has very high relevance” said Klopp
“By then we will have been back in training for more than one month. You can only find out where you are when you play against the best teams. Bayern and Atletico are certainly two of the best.
“It’s a great tournament in a great stadium. It’s always sold out and the atmosphere will be great.”
It will be the first time Liverpool have competed in the biannual event. Two semi-finals will be held on Tuesday, August 1.
The losing teams will then play for third place on Wednesday, August 2 before the winners meet in the final. The kick-off times will be 4.45pm and 7.30pm UK time.
