Chelsea FC are three points clear of the top of the Premier League following a 1-0 win at home to Stoke City FC.
Stoke looked to have got a point at Stamford Bridge until Ashley Cole broke Stoke hearts with a goal five minutes from time. Three points behind the Blues meanwhile, are Everton and West Brom, who beat Swansea City (3-0) and Reading (1-0) respectively.
Just behind them in fourth are Fulham who beat Wigan 2-1. Hugo Rodallega and Damien Duff scored either side of half time to put Martin Jol’s side into a commanding position before Arouna Kone gave the Latics late hope with a last minute strike.
Southampton claimed their first win of the season in style with a 4-1 win against Aston Villa. Darren Bent had put Villa in front before half time but second half goals from Rickie Lambert (2), Nathaniel Clyne and a Ciaran Clark own goal sealed the points for Saints and lifted them off the foot of the table.
They were replaced there by Reading whose wait for a first win continued as they lost 1-0 at West Brom. A 71st minute strike from Romelu Lukaku was enough to separate the sides and take the Baggies into third place.
It looked like Sunderland were going to get their first league win of the season but were denied at West Ham by Kevin Nolan’s goal in added time.
