Becks Good For Another Six Years

Never mind South Africa in 2010, David Beckham might still be around for the 2014 World Cup! At least that is the view of the AC Milan club doctor who gave the former England captain his medical at his new club.

Milan’s chief club doctor, Jean-Pierre Meerseeman, said:

“Beckham could go on for another five or six years. His cardiovascular readings are very good. His basic fitness is excellent. All he needs to do now is to alter his training programme slightly.”

Meerseeman is well versed in handling the fitness requirenments of aging players as the Milan side is one of the oldest squads in top level football.

His methods helped Alessandro Costacurta play until he was 41, while Paolo Maldini is still playing at 40.

“We test and retest our players in every aspect of body and mind,” said Meerseeman. “David is behind the others right now in terms of match fitness. It will take 15-20 days to reach the required level.”

Beckham joined the Serie A side on loan from LA Galaxy in a bid to retain fitness and force his way in to England manager Fabio Capello’s reckoning for the likely World Cup campaign in South Africa in 2010.
