After a weekend of exciting league fixtures that saw unexpected results in the EPL, Serie A and La Liga, our attention shifts back to the Champions League where German club Bayern Munich host Manchester United at the Allianz Arena tomorrow night in the one of the two quarter finals fixtures.
The match which will kick-off at 1945GMT is the first of a two leg tie in what is bound to be a case of de javu for Sir Alex Ferguson. Both clubs have a history in the Champions League with their most recognizable meeting coming in the 1999 final which United won 2-1.
Sir Alex will be hoping that history will favor his side when they take on the German giants in Munich tomorrow. Ferguson has no injuries worries to contend with. Rio Ferdinand and top scorer Wayne Rooney who missed Saturday’s 4-0 win over Bolton will be fit enough to feature in Tuesday’s clash.
Bayern on the other hand are not so lucky. They will be missing key player Arjen Robben who is out with a calf injury. An important thing to note is that both these sides made it through to the quarters by overcoming Italian opposition. Bayern Munich beat Fiorentina to book a place in the last 8 while Manchester United sent Italian Giants and 7 time European champions AC Milan home after attaining a 7-2 aggregate score against the Rossoneri.
United should not expect to romp over the Germans as they did to Milan. Bayern coach Luis Van Gaal will be keen to avenge for his side’s 2-1 loss to United in the 1999 final. Bayern were leading that match 1-0 and were on course for a 5th European title until United turned the game over with two late goals.
Bayern now second in the Bundesliga 2 points behind Schalke 04 definitely have a hard task ahead of them. As much as everyone thinks that United have a clear shot at clinching the title they last won in 2008, i am of a different school of thought. Bayern should at all costs prevent United from getting the away goal. Then, a semi berth will not be a long shot . After losing 2-1 Stuttgart on Saturday Bayern will definitely want to erase those painful memories. My prediction for this match is a 2-0 win in favour of Bayern Munich.
