2009 MLS Season Review: FC Dallas

2009 Recap: You know I love to call Dallas “The Former Burn”, so I had to bring back the old school logo. After all, so many “old school” things were awesome about Dallas in 2009. Sure, they missed the playoffs again and their record was mediocre at best (11-13-6), but at least they finished with a flurry of wins and were arguably the best team in the league the last two months. The question now is whether they can carry that momentum into a new MLS season.

Top Players: Jeff Cunningham is “old school”, that’s for sure. The aged vet has been plying his trade in MLS for a long time, and his recent results had been ridiculously ugly. Yet, he bounced back in 2009 to win the Golden Boot with 17 goals. He also had 8 assists, making him a veritable MVP candidate. Kenny Cooper was good (7 goals) before jumping ship midway through the season. The future of the team may be David Ferreira though, who had 8 goals & 7 assists.

Symbolic Stats: Dallas was despicable on the road, losing 10 games (3rd worst in MLS). The most telling stats though are that they were 1st in goals, but 2nd to last in goals against. They put on some nice shows for fans, but that more often than not did not translate into wins. Thus, they were similar to the ’08 Galaxy. Hopefully, they can look like the ’09 Gals in ’10. To do so, they will have to finish games stronger. They were last in wins when leading at the half.
