Roberto Mancini has extended his contract as Italy boss until 2022 after sealing qualification for Euro 2020.
Mancini has honoured a clause in his deal to commit his future for another three years, having transformed Italy’s fortunes since taking charge in May 2018.
Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup less than two years ago but the former Manchester City boss has guided his side to seven wins out of seven in Euro 2020 qualification.
Italy’s latest victory, a 2-0 victory over Greece, booked their place at the tournament next summer and prompted Mancini to put pen to paper on an extension.
After Saturday’s win over Greece, Mancini revealed his delight at sealing qualification but said Italy still have room for improvement.
‘First of all, we should enjoy the moment, particulary given where our starting point was,’ he said after the win over Greece.
‘We must be happy because we have qualified with three games to spare, but we must also improve. I have confidence in this team, I don’t believe there is a big gap between the biggest international teams.’
Should the 54-year-old honor the rest of his deal, he will remain at the reins until the 2022 World Cup on Qatar and potentially beyond that competition.
