"If we sold Falcao for €60 million, our debts would be history"

Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, the Atlético de Madrid managing director, has opened the door to a possible exit for Radamel Falcao at the end of the season.

“Getting €60 million for Falcao would solve virtually all of Atlético’s economic problems, our debts would be history”, said Gil.

However, Gil Marín was adamant that the Colombian predator would be seeing out the season with the
‘Rojiblancos’

“No doubt. He wants to stay, and all the players and the coach want him to”.

As for the possibility of Falcao moving across town to Real Madrid, Gil Marín claimed that

“if Atlético doesn’t qualify for the Champions League and can’t give Falcao what he’s asking for, then I doubt Real Madrid will be able to, either”.

The Atlético chief was at pains to stress that the board is doing everything in its power to assemble a competitive side.

“We’re doing what we can to achieve a miracle. We’re competing in Europe against more than 50 clubs with bigger budgets than us. We are doing the impossible, taking risks to give the fans the squad they want. But it’s hard to sustain”, he stated.

Gil Marín also reserved praise for Simeone.

“Appointing ‘El Cholo’ (Simeone) has been a blessing for Atlético. He is a great coach and has connected with the crowd. All the players believe in Simeone, and the fans are over the moon”.
