It would not be a transfer deadline without a surprise Liverpool and Chelsea deal. In January it was Torres going to Chelsea and this transfer window is was the sale of Raul Meireles to Chelsea for around £12m, who has signed at four-year deal with Chelsea.
Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas worked briefly with the Portugal international at Porto before Meireles moved to Anfield last August. He is currently injured with a collarbone problem suffered at Exeter City in the Carling Cup.
Earlier this week, Liverpool turned down an offer of £8m plus Yossi Benayoun, but Chelsea came back with a higher bid after Spurs turned down a reported bid of £30m plus Alex for Luka Modric.
Meireles was surplus requirements at Anfield after the summer signings of Adam, Henderson and Downing.
Chelsea have been desperate to add some creative players to their side, similar to Juan Mata. Meireles is a nice player but he is no Mata or Modric. Was this a god signing by Chelsea or a panic move?
