This is a club who history in deeply intertwined with European football from those four wins in seven years in the late 70s early 80s to the Heysel disaster in 1985.

Another Impressive Inter Win

new-inter-badgeGreat result for F.C. Internazionale in Europa on Thursday as they beat 10-man Dnipro 1-0 in Kiev in their Europa League opener. Danilo D’Ambrosio’s was the Inter goalscorer.

Heading into the match Dnipro were undefeated this season with five wins and a draw in their first six games in the Ukraine Premier League.

Dnipro’s form makes the Inter win and performance even more impressive. During the summer, Walter Mazzarri and Erick Thohir worked really hard on improving the quality of midfield players in the squad. As a result of the acquisitions of Gary Medel and Yann M’Vila, the Nerazzurri now have a group of midfield that are as good as anyone in Serie A.

The Club Licensing Committee essentially decides which clubs are entitled to licences to play Champions League and Europa League football. This will become increasingly important as UEFA’s Financial Fair Play rules shape the landscape of European football in the coming years.

Gill is a known proponent of FFP, and he was one of the leaders behind the Premier League adopting similar rules in English domestic football back in January.

Europa League Winners To Get Automatic Champions League Spot

chelsea-europa-leagueIn an attempt to boost the popularity of the Europa League, Uefa has announced that the 2015 Europa League winners will qualify for the following season’s Champions League.

More importantly, the Europa League winner will not take one of the designated Champions League spots that each league has, if they finish outside the Champions League qualifying spots. That means that there is the potential that Spain, Germany or England could have five teams in the Champions League at some point.

While it has not been confirmed, it is expected that the Europa League winners will go straight into the Champions League group stages.

Spurs Thrash Inter While Chelsea Lose Again

gareth baleTottenham Hotspur have one leg in the Europa League quarter-finals after an impressive 3-0 dismantling of Inter Milan at White Hart Lane tonight.

Gareth Bale with his 21st of the season, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jan Vertonghen were all on target in a one-sided match.

It was not a good night for Spurs’ London rivals Chelsea, who lost 1-0 at FC Steaua Bucureşti with Raul Rusescu scoring the only goal from the penalty spot. The Blues, who face Manchester United in the FA Cup on Sunday, were poor and will have to play a lot better in the second leg if they are to join the elite band of clubs to have won the full set of European Cup, Cup Winners’ Cup and UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League.

Mixed Night For English Clubs In Europa League

It was a very mixed night for Premier League clubs on Thursday in the Europa LEague, with Spurs beating Maribor, Newcastle drawing at Club Bruges while Liverpool lost at Anzhi.

Uefa have fined Lazio the paltry amount of 40,000 euros (£32,500) following racist chanting by their fans during a Europa League game at Tottenham last month.

Jermain Defoe, Aaron Lennon and Andros Townsend were reportedly subjected to monkey chants during the match.

In a whitewashing campaign Uefa is planning on using the Champions League and Europa League matches next week to showcase activities organised by the governing body and the equality group Football Against Racism in Europe.

But actions speak louder than words, and lets look at some recent Uefa fines, to put the Lazio fine into perspective:

Atlético And Liverpool Get Big Europa League Away Wins

They may have been without Falcao, but Atlético Madrid got their UEFA Europa League title defence off to a successful start while Liverpool also opened with victory on Thursday.

Diego Simeone opted to rest his star forward, who has been the top scorer in this competition for the past two seasons. It did nothing to knock Atlético out of their stride, though, as they easily beat Hapoel Tel-Aviv 3-0.

Liverpool also won away from home in an eight-goal thriller. After jumping out to a 2-1 lead, they found themselves trailing 3-2 to BYoung Boys midway through the second half. Then Jonjo Shelvey came off the bench to score Liverpool’s fourth and fifth goals to secure the win.
