Ronaldo Ties Real Madrid Scoring Record

Cristiano Ronaldo scored two extraordinary free kicks against Villarreal today and has tied Zarra and Hugo Sanchez’s record of 38 goals in La Liga. He will have a chance to break it against Almeria. The Portuguese’s incredible run during the present campaign makes him the favourite to win this year’s Golden Boot award. Ronaldo’s goals helped Real Madrid earn a sixth straight away victory with one game left in the championship.

Jose Mourinho used Kaka and Benzema in his starting lineup, leaving Ozil and Di Maria on the bench. Real Madrid kept possession of the ball, forcing Villarreal to feel out of place on their own turf. Marcelo proved dangerous down the left win and eventually scored the opener from a great lobbed shot .

Then it was time for a little bit of Ronaldo magic. Kaka was brought down outside the box and Ronaldo converted the free kick with a spectacularly powerful shot.

Things changed after half-time. Villarreal stepped up their game and kept possession of the ball for longer periods of time. This resulted in their only goal of the evening, scored by Cani following a great combination between Rossi and Bruno (51′).

The match was end to end as Real Madrid looked to hurt their hosts with quick counterattacks, while Villarreal continued to keep the pressure up on the Madrid goal. But into stoppage time Cristiano Ronaldo scored from another free kick to equal the record.
