Well that might not be the Copa del Rey Cup, but you get the point.
The Copa del Rey hasn’t received as much buzz as last year when Barcelona played in the final, but at least this year’s final will be a match that could be won by either opponent. The two teams facing off in the final match will be Sevilla and Atletico Madrid.
Sevilla squeaked into the final four this year with a victory in the last week to seal the fourth Champions League spot. It wasn’t a spectacular season by any stretch of the imagination, but the squad did defeat Barca in a two match aggregate to advance to the semi-final.
Atletico Madrid had a year that many would love to forget in league play, but the squad was able to win the Europa League Cup with a victory over Fulham in extra time of the final. Sergio Aguero hooked up with Diego Forlan to put the Spanish side on top. Ironically, both players could be on the transfer block this summer considering the organizations desperate need for cash flow and the fact that they will not be Champions League bound next season. Aguero is rumored to be heading to Chelsea and several teams are interested in the services of Forlan. This will likely be the duo’s last match together for Atletico.
Atletico Madrid has a chance to pull off a double despite their poor league form at the beginning of the season. Sevilla has a chance to bring home a trophy after shutting the door on the La Liga giants earlier in the year. Today should be a good match due to a variety of compelling stories.
The most significant of all being that either team has a chance to win thanks to Barca’s early exit.
