Atletico Madrid beat deflated Levante

The clock has struck midnight on Levante’s cinderella start to the season as the former leaders suffered their third consecutive defeat in a row, this time at the hands of Atlético Madrid.

All five goals came within a rollercoaster final 25 minutes as Atlético won 3-2. Xavi Torres equalised for the visitors shortly after Pizzi had put the hosts ahead, but Adrián López’s fourth goal of the season and Diego’s 83rd-minute effort ensured Atlético moved up to ninth. Rubén Suárez hit a consolation effort in added time for Levante, who remain fourth, eight points off the top.

Athletic Bilbao continued their recent run on good form as they climbed up to sixth place in the table after winning 2-1 at Sevila. Óscar de Marcos goal with 19 minutes remaining was the difference between the two sides. Jesús Navas had earlier cancelled out Andoni Iraola’s sixth-minute opener for the Basque club, but De Marcos made the difference as Athletic extended their unbeaten Liga run to eight games.

Sporting Gijón moved further away from the foot of the table after goals from Óscar Trejo and Nacho Novo helped them come from behind to beat Getafe 2-1, while Real Sociedad remain in the relegation zone following their scoreless draw with Espanyol.

Osasuna and Rayo Vallecano Madrid also drew 0-0, while the game between Granada and Mallorca was abandoned after an assistant referee was seemingly struck by something thrown from the crowd. There has been no word yet on when this match will be replayed.
