LLTO La Liga Weekly Review

Well the first week of the Primera Division has wrapped up and now it’s time to reflect on the debut matches of the year.  Real Madrid was given the honor of kicking off the 2009 season and the club did not disappoint in their first match.  The club beat Deportivo La Coruna by less then expected 3-2, but Ronaldo scored his first goal on a penalty and Diarra showed a rare offensive flair by scoring the winning goal in the second half.

Real Zaragoza faced 0ff with Tenerife in a battle of new top level squads.  And the former top tier club used the home-field advantage in their favor with a 2-0 victory.   Malaga surprised the world with a dominating 3-0 victory over Atletico Madrid.  Osasuna was able to scrape together a draw against powerhouse Villareal 1-1.  Athletic Bilbao edged out Espanol 1-0 in their first match of the year.  Getafe flexed the offensive muscles on the road against Racing Santander.  The club embarrassed their opponent on their own pitch with a 4-1 beating.

Almeria and Valladolid received a draw in a scoreless match.  Valladolid also played a man down almost the entire game, so the club should be happy with the result.  And speaking of red cards, two clubs suffered the consequences of losing a player early on in their debut match of the season.  New boys Xerez and powerhouse Sevilla both lost their first match and both clubs did not concede a goal until they were a man down.  Xerez lost two players by the final whistle in their 2-0 loss to Mallorca and Sevilla would have a frustrating second half against Valencia 2-0.

Barca would hand Sporting Gijon a 3-0 loss on Monday.  Zlatan Ibrahimovic would score the final goal in this one.  Look for Barca to give clubs headaches all season long.
