It was a rare week in La Liga becasue Barca did not win. Don’t get too excited because they did not lose either. But you have to hand it to Osasuna. They have played as well as anyone recently and they gave the treble winners a battle 1-1 leaving the door open for clubs to move up the board a few points. Real Madrid took advantage of the oppurtunity to move closer to Barca this weekend. They beat Getafe 2-0 despite playing a man down in the second half. They now sit only a point behind Barcelona. Sevilla was able to keep third place as well with a win over new boys Xerez 2-0. Luis Fabiano scored the second goal in the match and Sevilla remains four points back from a joint-lead with Spain.
Athletico Bilbao was able to get back on the winning side with a win over struggling Atletico Madrid 1-0. Villarreal dominated Tenerife 5-0 in a match that should hopefully hint at future performances for the Yellow Submarines. Mallorca remained a top six squad with a victory over Racing Santander 1-0. Valencia also remains a member of that category with a victory over struggling Malaga 1-0.
New boys Real Zaragoza pleased the home crowd with a victory over Almeria. The win moves Zaragoza further away from the relegation zone and into the middle-of-the-pack. Espanyol achieved a draw against Valladolid 1-1 and the club has quietly become a top eight squad. Deportivo La Coruna is another team that has earned that title and they battled recently red hot Sporting Gijon to a 1-1 tie.
