Roma Closing In On Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho could be returning to Serie A this summer, but his likely destination appears to be Rome and not Milan.

According to L’Equipe, AS Roma have beaten Inter Milan and have offered Mourinho a three-year contract to become their new manager this summer.

The Italian giants sacked Eusebio Di Francesco earlier this season, while Claudio Ranieri is currently in charge on an interim basis until the end of the campaign.

It has been a difficult season for Roma, who reached the Champions League semi-finals just 12 month ago. The hiring of a serial winner like Mourinho would be a major indication of the Giallorossi’s ambition and a statement of intent.

However, as noted by Corriere dello Sport, Mourinho is only interested in Roma if they qualify for the Champions League next season. They currently sit in fifth place in the Serie A table with just a point separating them and Atalanta with three games to go.

One interesting wildcard is that L’Equipe have been reporting that the owners of Paris Saint-Germain, Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) have been linked with a potential investment in Roma.

QSI have had a long standing interest in Mourinho, offering him the top job in Paris at least three times. Publicly PSG have said that they like their current boss, Thomas Tuchel, but PSG implosion since being knocked out of the Champions League by Manchester United, might have then questioning that stance. Would QSI prefer to see Mourinho in Paris or Rome?

It is a difficult job market for Jose Mourinho as there are no openings at any of the top clubs in Europe. Mourinho has prided himself on being a serial winner at the biggest clubs in world football. But after a disastrous end to his reign in Manchester, the Premier League is not a likely destination for Mourinho anytime soon, if ever. He has already managed at Real Madrid so Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are not possible destinations. In Italy, he has managed Inter, which rules out Juventus and AC Milan.

That leaves only one big club left, PSG, or Mourinho has to lower his sights and settle for a smaller club like Roma.

Where do you think Jose Mourinho will end up next season?
