Interesting back drop to this weekends U.S. v Poland game in Chicago. Aston Villa full-back Eric Lichaj had the option of playing for either the U.S. or Poland and he was actually called up by both countries for the game.
Lichaj decided he wanted to play for the county he was born in, rather than the country his parents are from.
Lichaj has been involved with various U.S. youth teams including the 2005 U-17 team which played in the World Championship. He was also named in the United States U-20 squad for the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup, although he missed out due to injury.
Lichaj has made his senior debut in Villa’s first team this season, facing Rapid Vienna in the Europa League and also starting against Blackburn in the Carling Cup.
