Aston Villa have shocked their own fans by making an £18m offer for Sunderland striker Darren Bent, a deal that could increase to £24m with add-ons.
Bent has handed in a transfer request at Sunderland and is expected to take a medical later today or early on Tuesday with the deal expected to be completed in the next 24 hours. The fee could rise to £24m with add-ons.
Villa, who are one point above the relegation zone in the Premier League have struggled to score goals all season with 22 goals in 22 league games. With Bent, Villa get a proven Premier League goalscorer, who has scored 36 goals in 62 games for Sunderland.
Villa fans have to wonder if Martin O’Neil left because he could not sign any big players, why five months later Gerard Houllier suddenly has all this money to spend.
Good move for Villa or a is it a deal that Sunderland could not turn down?
