A win or a draw against Levante this weekend and Jose Mourinho will have gone nine years without losing a league game at home. That is a streak that stretches back over 148 home game.
The last time the s”Special One” experienced a league defeat with a side that he coached was on 23 February, 2002, when Porto were beaten 3-2 by Beira Mar. Even then, Mourinho could claim extenuating circumstances given his Porto team were down to nine men by the end of the game and played for 65 minutes with less than 11 players.
Nearly nine years have passed since that defeat. What makes the streak more amazing to me is that Mourinho has done this at multiple clubs in Europe’s biggest leagues.
Over the course of the 147 league matches coached in Portugal (Porto), England (Chelsea), Italy (Inter Milan) and Spain (Real Madrid), he has won 122 times and drawn 25 with his teams scoring 331 goals (2.25 per match) and conceding 87 (0,59 per match).
When asked about the streak in his press conference this week, Mourinho said:
“I don’t do anything to keep my undefeated home record. If we happen to be drawing the game with 15 minutes to go tomorrow, I will not try to keep that result in order to keep my record. I want to win the match. I don’t want to think about records. It means nothing to me next to the points we can take at home because these may produce titles. That’s what matters.”
