With his goal against Shakhtar Donetsk last night, Lionel Messi broke the Barcelona single-season goal scoring record of 47 that was held by former Brazil striker Ronaldo.
Messi, who has 48 goals this season, is one goal behind the all-time Spanish record held by Real’s late Hungarian legend Ferenc Puskas, achieved in 1959-60. With potentially 11 games to go this season, Messi stands a great chance of smashing that record and completely rewriting Barcelona scoring records.
This season the Argentine has scored nine times in 10 Champions League encounters, 29 times in 28 league games, seven times in six Spanish Cup matches and three times in 2 Spanish Supercup games.
Messi is also the Golden Boot winner for the Champions League for the last two seasons. This season he once again leads that scoring race with 9 goals, and with potentially three games left in the competition could pass Ruud van Nistelrooy record of 12 goals in the the competition.
It is an absolutely amazing season that Messi is having. The only player who is close to him this season is Cristiano Ronaldo and watching these two player against each other four times in 18 days is going to be a real treat.
