Fabregas: Arsenal Do Not Need Me

cescfabregasFormer Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas says as he signed for Chelsea rather than rerun to Arsenal because he was not sure where he would fit into the Gunners line-up.

“When I decided that my time at Barcelona had ended, I looked for the best option for me,” Fabregas, currently on World Cup duty with Spain, told a news conference in quotes picked up by the Guardian.

“Arsenal was the first option, for contractual reasons. There was a clause that gave them the right to decide.

“We spoke to Wenger and he said that the space was very well filled by Mesut Ozil and it was hard to find a place for both of us in the team.”

Once it became clear that returning to the Emirates was not an option, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho moved in and close the deal.

Now a Chelsea player, the midfielder is looking forward to embarking on a new chapter in his career and is hopeful that much success will follow.

“I wanted to go back to the Premier League and I had to think about what my options were then,” he said. “I had many very good offers, the logical options.

“I spoke to Jose Mourinho and he told me that he wanted me there. He convinced me very, very quickly. He told me what I wanted to hear; he won me over and convinced me.

“It was very quick. I am very happy, very satisfied and I think it will all go phenomenally well.”

Arsenal fans what do you think of Fabregas’s comments that Wenger said he would not get into the team ahead of Ozil? Would you rather have Ozil or Fabregas?

I am a little surprised with the Ozil comparison. I always thought that Fabregas’s best position was central midfield, where Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere play.

I understand Arsene Wenger’s thoughts that he has players who play in Fabregas’s position, but what about competition for places and squad depth, especially in an area where Arsenal were really thin at times last season?
