Chelsea Take Summer Spending Past £80m

Chelsea have taken their summer spending past the £80million mark as Roman Abramovich has obviously been reinvigorated after winning the Champions League last season.

On Friday, Chelsea sealed the £7m capture of Spanish right back Cesar Azpilicueta, 22, from Marseille on Friday and finalised the £9m transfer of Wigan forward Victor Moses after he passed a medical.

The £80million is the most that Chelsea have spent in a single transfer window since he they spent £112m spree in 2003, Abramovich’s first season his in charge of Chelsea.

Despite spending more money than any other Premier League club this summer, Roberto Di Matteo insisted champions Manchester City and runners-up Manchester United remain the favourites for the title.

‘We need to make up 25 points and I don’t think any team have done that in the history of the Premier League. They are still the two teams you need to beat.’

While Di Matteo is trying to downplay Chelsea’s title hopes, Abramovich has not spent over £80million to finish fifth again. He is expecting Chelsea to be title contenders, and if Di Matteo is not up to the job the call will go out to Pep Guardiola in New York to come and rescue Chelsea’s season.
