Pep Guardiola claimed the media want Liverpool to win the Premier League just moments after Manchester City edged ever closer to sealing the crown.
City overcame Leicester 1-0 on Monday night thanks to Vincent Kompany’s sensational strike at the Etihad, ensuring they just need to beat Brighton on the final day of the season to defend their top-flight title.
Guardiola’s outfit have been involved in an enthralling tussle all season with Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool for the Premier League title.
City have amassed 95 points with just one match remaining, while the Reds sit just one behind heading into Sunday’s eagerly-anticipated action.
And following the final whistle on Monday, Guardiola was in a defiant mood as they yet again leapfrogged Liverpool, who are fighting for their first Premier League title.
‘People in the media desire Liverpool to win the title. So I am sorry for the people that it’s in our hands,’ Guardiola told talkSPORT.
The pressure remains on City heading into the final round of Premier League action and Guardiola admits it will be tough at the Amex Stadium against Brighton, who have escaped relegation.
‘Liverpool are playing without pressure because it’s not in their hands,’ Guardiola added. ‘We have the pressure because it’s in our hands.
‘One game left and we’ll try. It is now 95 points and we need one more victory. We’ll go to Brighton trying. I don’t have to say anything to the players because they are mature.
‘Brighton will be tough. They went to Arsenal and got a result. We played them in the FA Cup and that was tough because they are strong, have the set pieces, and I know they’re playing for pride.
‘But it’s in our hands. We were seven points behind and never gave up. We won 13 games in a row and that’s why we are in that position.
‘Tonight was an incredible performance. Incredible. I’m sorry but it was so good. We are controlling the games. It’s not over yet though. There is happiness of course because we knew it how difficult Leicester would be.’
