Barcelona Stunned 4-1 By Chivas Guadalajara

by David on August 4, 2011

In front of another record setting crowd, Barcelona was stunned as Mexican side Chivas de Guadalajara beat them 4-1 Wednesday night.

It all started great for Barca when David Villa scored in the third minute. Gerard Pique sent a long pass to an open Villa, who fired a shot past Chivas goalkeeper Luis Michel.

Barça continued to dominate and made plenty of chances. On 27 minutes Villa rounded off a great team move, but shot wide and then a minute later Carlos Carmona cut in from the wing and hit the outside of the post with his shot.

David Villa had another good chance at the end of the first half when he beat the Chivas keeper, only to see his shot hit the bar and the teams went in at the break with Barça deservedly in the lead.

In the second half though it was all Chivas as they scored four unanswered goals, highlighted by a brilliant double by forward Marco Fabian, an unstoppable shot in the 60th minute and a highlight-film-caliber overhead kick in the 63rd

Barça certainly didn’t give up though and despite having a very young side on the pitch –with, Riverola, Armando, Muniesa and Espinosa- they continued to stick to their game. On 72 minutes, Casillas made it three and soon after Riverola and Deulofeu both had chances to reduce the distance, but the Mexican keeper and his defence managed to keep them out.

Finally, in injury time Verduzco made it 1-4 and Barça suffered their second loss on the US Tour, despite their overall dominance of possession and chances.

What has to worry Pep Guardiola is that Barca have now conceded six goals in two games in the U.S., a defensive showing that needs to be improved.

All the Barca players should be on the tour. The only doubt is Messi as he will be playing for Argentina in the Copa America this summer
