Juventus Beat Inter 2-1 In First Leg Of Coppa Italia Semi-Final

Coppa Italia Trophy

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice to fire Juventus to a 2-1 comeback win over Inter Milan in a hard-fought Coppa Italia semi-final first-leg clash at San Siro on Tuesday.

Lautaro Martinez gave the home side an early lead but the Portuguese replied with a penalty before pouncing on a defensive mix-up to put the Turin club in front before halftime.

Inter, without suspended top scorer Romelu Lukaku, pushed for an equaliser but couldn’t find a way past 43-year-old goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon. The Italian produced a superb save to deny Matteo Darmian on the 1,100th senior appearance of his career for club and country.

January Transfer Window

Another January transfer window has come and gone. This one though lacked the fireworks of previous windows due to the ongoing impact that COVID-19 is having on the finances of football clubs around the world.

The lack of money does not mean that some clubs improved themselves during the window, while the lack of activity was a nightmare for some.

Here is a look at the winners and losers from the past month of transfer business

Inter Dominate Juventus In Derby D’Italia Win

Juventus v Inter

Inter dealt a blow to JuventusSerie A title defence and moved level on points with leaders Milan by securing a 2-0 victory at San Siro on Sunday.

Former Juve midfielder Arturo Vidal opened his Inter account with a 12th-minute header and Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku wasted chances to increase the Nerazzurri’s lead.

The Bianconeri were unable to make the most of those reprieves as an emphatic finish at the end of a route-one move saw Nicolo Barella double Inter’s advantage.

Piro Pleads For Patience At Juventus

Pirlo Juventus

Andrea Pirlo described Federico Chiesa as “naive” after he was sent off on his debut in Saturday’s 1-1 Serie A draw against Crotone.

Chiesa, who joined the champions on loan from Fiorentina on transfer deadline day, saw red on the hour mark for a late challenge on Luca Cigarini.

He had earlier set up Alvaro Morata for Juve’s leveller after Simy had given Crotone the lead from the penalty spot.

Adrien Rabiot was dismissed in the 2-2 draw with Roma on September 27, Juve’s last competitive game after they were handed a 3-0 win for Napoli’s no-show last time out, and Pirlo accepts his fledgling side’s over-enthusiasm might come back to haunt them on occasion.

Serie A 2020-21 Fixtures Released

Serie A Fixtures With Ball

The 2020-2021 Serie A fixtures list has been released and Andrea Pirlo’s first league match in charge of Juventus will be at home to Sampdoria as he looks to guide the club to a record 10th successive Serie A title.

Juventus start at home to Sampdoria before a daunting trip to the Stadio Olimpico to take on Roma. For Inter Milan, who look set to be Juventus’ toughest challenger for the title, they begin their bid away to newly-promoted Benevento.

The release sparked lots of interest in when Pirlo and Conte will go head to head but fans will have to remain patient with the first meeting not until January 2021.

Juventus Name Andrea Pirlo As Their New Manager

Pirlo Juventus

Andrea Pirlo was named as the Juventus manager on Saturday night but only after president Andrea Agnelli decided he could not afford first choices Mauricio Pochettino and Zinedine Zidane.

Former Tottenham boss Pochettino reportedly wanted around £8million a year to take the reins in Turin, while Real Madrid head coach Zidane would have asked for even more, at around £10.8m.

As well as economic reasons, particularly given sacked coach Maurizio Sarri’s £21m pay-off, Pirlo has a similar on-field mentality to previous successful Juventus managers Antonio Conte and Massimiliano Allegri, which has worked in his favour with Agnelli.

Juventus SACK Maurizio Sarri

Sarri Juventus

Juventus have sensationally axed Maurizio Sarri after just one season in charge following the club’s Champions League elimination.

Despite leading the Turin giants to a ninth straight Serie A title, supporters and the club’s hierarchy have been left unimpressed by the veteran 61-year-old.

And the former Chelsea manager’s fate was sealed the day after the early European exit at the hands of Lyon.

The official announcement was released on Saturday following a crisis meeting held between members of the club’s hierarchy.

New Serie A Season To Begin September 12

Serie A Fixtures With Ball

Serie A has announced that the 2020-2021 season will begin on September 12, decision that has upset Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis.

With five Serie A teams still involved in Champions League and the Europa League, there is a possibility that at least one Italian team will play its last game of the 2019-2020 season on August 23.

De Laurentiis feels that having a potential pre-season of only three weeks is not long enough and he feels that the 2020-21 season should start on October 4 instead.

Juventus Reach Coppa Italia Final

Coppa Italia Trophy

Thirteen-time winners Juventus reached the Coppa Italia final on the away goals rule at AC Milan’s expense as Italy’s football season restarted.

After drawing 1-1 in Milan on 13 February, Juve could not find the net in a semi-final second leg played behind closed doors in Turin.

Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty awarded for handball before Milan’s Ante Rebic was sent off following his 16th-minute foul on Danilo.

Juventus, under former Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri, will meet either Inter Milan or Napoli in Wednesday’s final in Rome.

Napoli take a 1-0 lead into Saturday’s Coppa Italia semi-final second leg.
