U.S. Draws Brazil and Italy in Confederation Cup

The United States had no luck when the draw for the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup was made. The tournament that runs from June 14-28, 2009, in South Africa pits the U.S. against the reigning world champions Italy, five-time World Cup winners Brazil, and reigning African Cup of Nations winners Egypt for the that will be played from.

The U.S. kicks off action against Italy on June 15 at Loftus Versfeld in Tshwane/Pretoria, and then faces Brazil on June 18 in the same venue. The United States finishes group play on June 21 against Egypt at Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg.

Realistically Brazil and Italy will be huge favorites to qualify from this group. For the U.S. it will be good international experience to play against such quality opposition and I think even the most optimistic U.S. soccer fan would be ecstatic if the U.S. could get three points from these three games.

Group A where tournament hosts South Africa is much easier as that contains the hosts, Asia Champions Iraq, current European Champions Spain and OFC Champions New Zealand.
