New York 3 San Jose 0
Luke Rodgers scored the first two goals of his MLS career and added an assist to lead the Red Bulls to a victory over the Earthquakes.
The win for the Red Bulls (2-1-2) snapped a three-game winless streak. It also came at the expense of the Earthquakes (1-2-2), who shocked and upset the Red Bulls, the MLS Eastern Conference regular season champions, in the opening round of the 2010 MLS Cup playoffs.
Thierry Henry, who had an assist earlier in the game, scored his first goal of the season on a header with three minutes left, with Rodgers providing the assist.
DC United 3 Toronto 0
Chris Pontius scored twice and Charlie Davies continued his comeback from a near-fatal car crash with a goal in his first MLS start to help D.C. United beat Toronto FC (1-2-3) 3-0 on Saturday night.
It was Davies’ fifth goal in four games for United (2-2-1). His previous four, three from penalties, came in 120 minutes off the bench. He could have had another in the 89th minute Saturday had it not been for a fine reflex save from goalie Stefan Frei.
The 24-year-old striker is on loan from France’s Sochaux. And he looked good on the comeback trail after suffering a broken and dislocated elbow, broken bones in his right leg, and broken nose, forehead and eye socket in the October 2009 crash that killed another passenger.
Crew 1 Sporting Kansas City 0
Robbie Rogers scored his second goal of the season in the 53rd minute and the Crew set a team record with their fourth straight shutout, beating Sporting Kansas City.
The Crew haven’t allowed a goal in a club-record 373 minutes.
Kansas City (1-2-1) went down a man in the 72nd minute when defender Julio Cesar received his second yellow card of the match after a handball call while challenging Crew forward Tommy Heinemann.
Seattle 1 Philadelphia 1
Alvaro Fernandez scored in the 91st minute to lead Sounders FC to a tie at the Union. Fredy Montrero had an assist for Seattle FC (1-2-3), which has one win and three ties in its last four games.
Carlos Ruiz gave Philadelphia the lead in the 32nd minute. After Kyle Nakazawa was fouled, Ruiz lined up for the free kick and connected from about 25 yards out, sending the ball past diving Seattle goalkeeper Kasey Keller.
It was Ruiz’s second goal in league play this season for the Union (3-1-1), who lead the Eastern Conference with 10 points.
Philadelphia goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon, who entered with a league-low 0.25 goals against average, had three shutouts in the first four matches. He has allowed only two goals all season.
Chivas USA 0 Vancouver 0
Dan Kennedy recorded his second shutout of the season, helping winless Chivas USA play the Vancouver Whitecaps to a scoreless draw.
Whitecaps goalkeeper Jay Nolly made a point-blank save on Ben Zemanski in the second minute while earning his first shutout of the season.
The scoreless game came after Vancouver had allowed 10 goals in its previous five games. The Whitecaps (1-2-3) remain unbeaten in four home games. Chivas (0-2-3) has yet to record a win.
Vancouver striker Eric Hassli started after serving a one-game suspension. He’d earned the ban by throwing his jersey into the crowd April 6 to receive his second yellow card of that game.
