The first goal of the 2008 MLS season was scored by Adam Moffat of the Columbus Crew in their 2-0 win over Toronto FC. Columbus’ Brian Carroll sent a long cross to Moffat who chested the ball down and immediately sent a scorching shot on net that beat Brain Edwards giving the Crew a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute.
Moffat said after the game about only his second career goal for the Crew, “It’s a great feeling. Anytime I score it’s a surprise to myself, really. So it was good.”

The Colorado Rapids had just about the worst offense in the league last season. They finished dead last in the West in goals scored. They also averaged less than one goal a game, a feat matched only by newbie Toronto FC.
It wasn’t just last year either.
The Rapids have played great D for years, but they’ve been plagued by a perpetual inability to score. No goals meant no success. All they needed was a playmaker.

In the opening weekend of the MLS there were some surprises, as defending champion Houston and revamped DC United were both shutout.
New England Revolution 3 Houston Dynamo 0
In a match up of the last two MLS Finals the New England Revolution dominated defending champion Houston Dynamo beating them 3-0. Steve Ralston and Adam Cristman both scored goals in the first half. Sainey Nyassi made it 3-0 in stoppage time for the Revs. Revs goalie Matt Reis played great and earned the shutout to extend New England’s winning streak, during regular season games, over Houston to 5 games, going 2-0-3 in that 5 game span. However Houston wins win it counts beating the Revs in the MLS finals in 2006 and 2007.

The UEFA Executive Committee recently confirmed the selection of the two stadiums after it met in Liechtenstein. The committee also was set to choose a venue of the 2011 Champions League final but that decision was postponed. The reason that the two stadiums were chosen, which are the home stadiums of Real Madrid and Hamburg SV, are because of their facilities, security, and accommodation.

Arsenal over Liverpool
This is a tough draw for both teams who will play each other a few times between match ups in the Champions League. This is a classic match up of European soccer vs. Premier League soccer, as Liverpool always performs well in European play, while Arsenal always battles for the Premier League title. Things are no different this year, as Liverpool made it to the quarters of Champions League and are 4th in the Premier League, while Arsenal was recently surpassed by Chelsea for the 2nd spot after losing to them on Sunday. Even though Liverpool is moving up and Arsenal is moving down I think this is Arsenal’s year, as they will dispatch of Liverpool in the quarters.

Soccer Preview - March 28
Posted on March 28, 2008 - Filed Under Europe, Premier League | Leave a Comment
This is a big weekend in soccer with the Premiership title and relegation battles in full swing, the big Glasgow derby between Rangers and Celtic plus the opening weekend of Major League Soccer.
Last week we predicted correctly two of three games and this week we turn our crystal towards Anfield as well as the two MLS games on Saturday.
As the relegation battle intensifies in England, do you think that Bolton are wishing they had reinvested some of that Anelka money in another goalscorer? Bolton have struggled to score since Anelka left, and I think they will get relegated this year. If they get relegated, not buying another forward will be a decision that will haunt Bolton for years to come.

Toronto Looking for More Offense This Season
Posted on March 27, 2008 - Filed Under Toronto FC | Leave a Comment
Toronto FC is trying to avoid their scoring woes, which severely hurt them last season. The club set a record that they would like to soon forget during their first year in the MLS. On July 7th against Chicago the team scored a goal in the 78th minute. Two months and nearly 10 games went by before they would score another goal. Obviously they did not win any of those games, as it’s hard to win putting up a goose egg on the scoreboard every game. It was the end of the summer before Toronto FC would find the back of the net again.
