Real Madrid is off to a solid start thanks in large part to an excellent defensive effort so far this season with only two goals allowed in league play. But if the team has any hopes of winning the Champions League or La Liga title then they will need to play even better on the offensive portion of the pitch.
Jose Mourinho has vented several times that he desires one more forward this January and the former Inter and Chelsea man has expressed his frustrations with only having two big names to fulfill the position at the moment in Gonzalo Higuian and Karim Benzema. Mourinho wants a third reliable forward to mix in with these two men and the Special One currently fears having both forwards on the pitch at the same time due to the risk of injury and lack of a solid replacement late in the match.
And rumors have recently linked Atheltic Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente to the side this January. Real Madrid sporting director Miguel Pardeza denied that they would sign the footballer, but Pardeza did admit that Llorente was an “interesting” player that has some “rare qualities”:
It’s too early to tell. We’re happy with the squad. I don’t see any pressing need but I don’t know yet whether we will have injury problems between now and January. Anyway, it’s always a possibility. We won’t be looking into it until much further down the line. Llorente is a great striker, who has some rare qualities, and he has made huge progress in recent years, as has been clear in the recent games with Spain and Athletic. He is an interesting player, clearly, but for now we are only thinking about the players already at the club. It’s too early to talk about the future.
We will have to wait and see if Llorente is the man this January, but expect los Blancos to bring in at least one reliable forward this upcoming transfer window.
