The race for third place in Serie A couldn’t get more feistier after this weekend result where Lazio found themselves level on points with three other teams after Edy Reja’s squad got beaten 2-0 by one of their rivals, Udinese.
Goals from Antonio Di Natale and Pereyra sealed an important victory for the Fruliani which made them equaling the Biancocelesti’s 55 points along with Napoli and also Inter Milan, creating a grand slam finish in the next three games.
Udinese’s victory was not earn in an easy way though as they were forced to wait until midway in the second half to net their first goal through Di Natale’s exquisite finish inside the penalty area, volleying Domizzi’s cross after peeling away from Andre Dias. The match got really heated after that goal and some controversial scene happened at injury time where Francesco Guidolin’s side scored their second through Pereyra’s shot after a quick counter attack.
The controversy occurred just when Udinese players were running on goal and some Lazio men actually stopped their chase because they hear a loud whistle coming from the crowd, thinking that the referee had already ended the game. That situation caused some problems for the Biancocelesti as they got Dias sent off because of protesting, while several others got booked and some might get some further decisions because of their actions towards the officials.
Meanwhile, previously, Inter Milan successfully grabbed another important 2-1 victory against an already relegated Cesena at San Siro. It wasn’t an easy game as the Nerazzurri were going a goal down from Ceccarelli’s goal but got back with Joel Obi’s deflected shot and Mauro Zarate’s header in the second half.
Another excellent result which could salvaged Inter’s season as the third place position are simply up for grasp, although the remaining few games might be really difficult for the Nerazzurri with Ac Milan and Lazio on the way. Still it should provide a spectacular scenes in the last few games as with the Scudetto race isn’t completely dead yet, the race for that final Champions League ticket can add to the exciment in Serie A.
