It can’t get any better than this. The Fifa U-20 World Championships will come to an end today at the Cairo International stadium.Today either Ghana or Brazil will be crowned champions. Prolific striker Dominic Adiyiah (who is top scorer) and outstanding center-forward Alan Kardec will face off.
Kardec who was aiming at getting the golden boot award will have to settle for second place. The irony of it all is Africa’s good performances in such junior championships compared to the senior editions. It seems like tournaments such as the U-17 and the U-20 are Africa’s cup of tea.
Ghana have what it takes to to lift this trophy. Four years ago, Nigeria was in a similar situation. It was a case of Africa meets South America. Argentina were their opposition and with Messi just beginning to take the footballing scene by storm, they prevailed against Nigeria.
This time history won’t be too kind to South America. I have to admit Brazil are good but watching Ghana come through the qualifying rounds i consider them favorites to win this match. Ghana beat Hungary 3-2 in a thrilling encounter to secure a place in the final while their opponents Brazil pipped their neighbors Costa Rica 1-0 to make it through.
Brazil already have the status as the greatest footballing nation on the planet and everyone will expect them to win this tournament. Ghana on the other hand have the pressure to win this tournament on African soil. That said, tonight’s game will definitely be a match to watch.
