The MLS Expansion Draft to supply the Philadelphia Union with its first roster took from Columbus a great goal-scoring threat in Alejandro Moreno and now they need to “refresh” their team?
They lost one guy and now the word “refresh” is being thrown around like they just blew up their entire team. Columbus won the 20087 MLS Cup and they lost in the playoffs to this year’s Cup Champion RSL. What kind of refreshing do you need? If this team is as good as everyone says they are they could shift some players around and plug in a substitute into the starting lineup and reload for next season.
Just because you lost a great goal-scorer doesn’t mean everything needs to be turned around. I hope the Crew get smart and just move some people around and say to themselves “We won the Cup and then lost to the eventual Champion in consecutive seasons. You know, that ain’t bad.” Now, losing sucks, but you’ve got to be honest with yourself when things don’t go exactly the way you want them to. I’m not sure how the Crew will respond, but I hope they don’t do anything stupid or they’ll be watching RSL win the Cup next season too.
The MLS has the Adidas Generation team on a tour and I can’t help but wonder what this kind of club does for the sport here in America. Don’t get me wrong; I think it’s a great idea to showcase the talent that we’ve got here, but I don’t think it’s a smart idea to compete with the World Cup. Now, I know the World Cup isn’t actually here yet, but the European Leagues are still in season and the World Cup is coming. How much impact can an MLS “All-Star” team have when it’s traveling at this particular point in time? Although, it seems like if they were doing humanitarian work it would make more sense. Anything nice coming from the U.S. would be good.
