Last night, Nigeria’s Super Eagles joined the Pharaohs of Egypt in the quarter finals of the Africa Cup of Nations as they beat a hapless Mozambique 3-0 thanks in part to Odemwingie’s two fabulous strikes.
Nigeria qualified as runners up from Group C and they will now have to wait to know their opponents as Group D nations prepare to take to the pitch in their final group matches tonight.
A draw was enough to get the Super Eagles into the last 8 however, Odemwingie made his intentions clear from the onset as every opportunity he got, he made an attempt on goal. Sometimes his over zealousness proved to be their undoing as he wasted perfect chances to set up his teammates.
The Locomotiv Moscow man however was lucky when in the dying minutes of the 1st half his left foot shot made its way past Rafael into the right hand corner of the goal. Two minutes into the second half and Odemwingie was on target again as the Super Eagles doubled their lead through a simple tap in after tearing up the Mozambican defense. Nigeria’s late substitute Obafemi Martins put the game out of Mozambique’s reach after John Obi Mikel’s thunderous shot rebounded of Rafael to fall on his path and leave him with just the simplest of touches to grab Nigeria’s third.
In the day’s other game Egypt were 2-0 winners over Benin. The Pharaohs have a perfect record going into the quarters and they have singled out Ivory Coast as their main competitors. Tonight the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon face Tunisia in what will be a battle for group supremacy. Cameroon need nothing short of a win to get them in to the quarters and they will not make any mistakes this time round.
The first half of the quarters has already been decided with the hosts Angola taking on Ghana while the Ivory Coast play Algeria.
