There were no big surprises Tuesday night as the big guns in the Premier League entered the Capital One Cup.
Spurs thumped Barclays Premier League rivals Aston Villa 4-0 with Jermain Defoe scoring twice and Paulinho and Nacer Chadli also hitting the target.
Manchester City continued where they left off in Sunday’s 4-1 drubbing of Manchester United by putting five past FA Cup holders Wigan. Stevan Jovetic was on target twice, scoring his first goals for the club, while Edin Dzeko, Yaya Toure and Jesus Navas also struck in the 5-0 rout at the Etihad Stadium.
Chelsea had no problem beating Swindon Town as Fernando Torres scored one and made the other in a 2-0 Chelsea win.
Fulham ended Everton’s unbeaten start to the season with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory. Darren Bent scored the winner after Dimitar Berbatov had cancelled out Steven Naismith’s opener.
Sunderland moved on from the Paolo Di Canio era by beating Peterborough 2-0 thanks to goals from Emanuele Giaccherini and Valentin Roberge.
Elsewhere West Ham United threw away a two-goal load against fellow Premier League side Cardiff City before winning the game through a late header by Ricardo Vaz Te.
Ravel Morrison and Matthew Jarvis put the Hammers ahead and Cardiff responded through Craig Noone and Peter Odemwingie, only to have their hearts broken by Vaz Te.
The closest we can to an upset was Norwich beating Watford 3-2 at Vicarage Road on extra time. An injury time Gary Hooper goal had sent the tie into extra time and then the former Celtic striker broke Watford hearts six minutes from the end of extra time.
