Although Sporting Gijón fell at home to Real Betis this weekend by a score of 2-1, striker Mate Bilić has carried the club to lofty heights thus far.
The 28-year-old is his club’s leading goal scorer in league and in the late stage’s of this weekend’s match, he caused enough havoc to potentially add to the tally. Sadly, it was not to be as Gijón fell.
The club was promoted to La Liga for the 2008-09 campaign. Currently, the outfit sits in 13th with 15 points.
The 28-year-old Croatian joined Sporting Gijón in January 0f 2008 via Austria’s Rapid Vienna. He has roughly scored once every two league matches since rejoining the Spanish side. Mate Bilić was with Sporting Gijón for the 2003-04 campaign.
Easily one of his career highlights was a recent hat trick against Sevilla in September of 2008.
