Spotlight on Mate Bilić

Although Sporting Gijón fell at home to Real Betis this weekend by a score of 2-1, striker Mate Bilić has carried the club to lofty heights thus far.

The 28-year-old is his club’s leading goal scorer in league and in the late stage’s of this weekend’s match, he caused enough havoc to potentially add to the tally.  Sadly, it was not to be as Gijón fell.

The club was promoted to La Liga for the 2008-09 campaign.  Currently, the outfit sits in 13th with 15 points.

The 28-year-old Croatian joined Sporting Gijón in January 0f 2008 via Austria’s Rapid Vienna.  He has roughly scored once every two league matches since rejoining the Spanish side.  Mate Bilić was with Sporting Gijón for the 2003-04 campaign.

Easily one of his career highlights was a recent hat trick against Sevilla in September of 2008.

Two more key members of Sporting Gijón include:

1. Pedro: The 24-year-old homegrown talent has been a key member of the club’s recent success.  The midfielder has appeared in over sixty league matches since 2006.

2. Pichu: The 24-year-old goalkeeper is a product of Atletico Madrid.  He has finally begun to receive staring assignments in La Liga which will only spark his growth.

Is Sporting Gijón going to remain in Spain’s top flight?
