Although Wesley Sneijder is enjoying his time with Serie A giants, Inter Milan, you couldn’t possibly say the same about the Dutchman in his 2-year stint with Real Madrid. With Sneijder not able to find a regular starting role with Los Blanco’s , the club decided to let him depart which turned out to be the best choice Sneijder could have made, or really forced into.
When Sneijder made his arrival at San Siro, no one really knew how well the player was going to perform as he just endured a struggling 2 seasons. However, playing under -Now Real Madrid coach- Jose Mourinho, Sneijder admits that the Portuguese coach brought out the best in him.
Sneijder went on to say the following to L’Equipe about his grateful time playing under Jose Mourinho:
“Did he [Mourinho] try to make me join Real again? Of course. We remain in contact but it is impossible. I can’t go back to a club that treated me that badly. I can’t act as if nothing has happened but Real is now the past. I will never play for Real again. I didn’t know him before I joined Inter, but he sent me messages saying he knew about my difficult situation in Madrid. He told me ‘I want to win the Champions League and if you come we can achieve that’. I was hesitant because I didn’t want to leave Real as a failure. I asked the officials there for a chance to prove myself, but they sent me to train away from the group. Even for just one season it was a delight to then work with Mourinho. One year with him is worth 10 years with any other coach.”
Think Real Madrid made the wrong choice in letting Sneijder go? How much better can you see Madrid if Sneijder had choose to reunite with Los Blanco’s? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below.
