Dejan Stankovic scored three goals last weekend for Inter in an impressive 5-2 victory for the defending champs over Parma. So why not make the consistent Inter midfielder the Serie A Player Profile of the Week?
Stankovic is one of the most underrated players in all of Serie A. The midfielder is often used as a key reserve by Inter Milan, but (starting or coming in as a substitute) few have left the impact that the Serbian has for Inter over the last five seasons.
Stankovic is known and respected around the league for his well rounded style of play. The midfielder has missile launcher capabilities from outside the box and excellent passing skills and vision down the field. He is one of those valuable guys that can play multiple midfield positions and can fill-in for plenty of banged up or winded players in the midfield over the course of a season. It is players like Stankovic that are the glue to championship clubs like Inter because of what they bring to the table each and every week.
And the irony is that Stankovic has never had a double digit goal year in Serie A and is rarely the candidate to win a single award at the end of the season, but the midfielder has been a reliable player to have on an Italian club for twelve straight seasons. Originally a member of Lazio, Stankovic moved over to Inter in 2004. Since his arrival the Serbian has been used as an attacking midfielder, winger, and even as a defensive midfielder every so often.
Stankovic joined Inter at the perfect time and has enjoyed a streak of five consecutive championships with the squad. Many footballers and coaches alike consider Stankovic the best midfielder in all of Italian football. And if Inter wants to win yet another Scudetti then Stankovic will have to be a large reason why the club prevails.
