SATO 2009 Serie A Awards: Most Disappointing Club

It is always hard picking a football club that finished on the top half of the league this year, but AS Roma wins the award for most disappointing squad this season despite finishing in sixth place and qualifying for the UEFA Cup next season.

The 2008/2009 season would be a year full of steps backwards for La Magica.   Going into the year AS Roma had finished runner-up in Serie A three straight seasons behind powerhouse Inter.  At the end of the 2007/2008 season the club nearly won the league title  (They finished two points behind the champions).  So going into this season, many AS Roma fans thought this might be the year they could return to champion form for the first time since 2001.  Unfortunately, AS Roma would go the other direction.

AS Roma was worse this year then the previous three in almost every critical statistic.  La Magica failed to score seventy goals this season for the first time since the 2004/2005 season.  The club finished the year with sixty-four shots into the net.  Also the defensive side was terrible finishing near the back of the pack.  The club gave up sixty-one goals this season which was almost as many as AS Roma had given up the two previous seasons.  Last year the club only conceded thirty-seven goals.

The most negative statistic for AS Roma fans to think about this off-season was the club’s result in the win column.  Going into the 2008/2009 season AS Roma had great momentum.  The club had improved on a twenty-two win season with a solid twenty-four victories in 2007/2008.  Unfortunately, AS Roma dropped six more matches this season and finished the year with eighteen victories.   AS Roma will have to compete on a higher level if they want to be the best in Serie A next year.
