Pressure is mounting on Real Madrid forward Cristiano to match the 5 goals rival Lionel Messi scored against Bayer Lerkusen last week when his side takes on CSKA Moscow in the return leg of their last 16 Champions League fixture at the Santiago Bernabeu tonight.
Ronaldo who himself has had an amazing season so far, acknowledged that replicating Messi’s feat would be very hard. Truth be said, both players are having a fantastic season and there is nothing really that can separate them.
Messi who scored 53 goals in 55 appareances for Barca last season, has already bettered that tally scoring 50 in 43 matches this season and with a sizeable chunk of it still left to play, he could better last year’s performance.
Ronaldo on the other hand has scored 40 and though quite a bit behind on Messi, the Portuguese forward has seen his tally for club rise to 125 in 127 appearances! He is practically averaging 2 goals every game for Madrid!
“I’m happy for Messi, I’m happy for football,” Ronaldo said in Tuesday’s pre-match press conference.
“I’m not sure if I’m capable of one day scoring five goals. I hope I can,”
His coaching Jose Mourinho also had kind words for the Argentine star saying that scoring 5 goals is never an easy feat.
“To score five goals is never easy,” Mourinho said. “It was a nice night for him.”
Despite Madrid having one foot in the last eight, a talking point that emerged during and after the press conference was star forward Cristiano Ronaldo’s uncharacteristically tentative demeanor. It is secret to see that the Madrid forward was not happy.
Whether this could be taken as a sign that he could be soon leaving the club is up for speculation, however, what is certain is that both player and coach are not the same people we have always known.
