AS Roma won the first big match Serie A fixture yesterday when they beat Inter Milan by a solitary goal in Rome’s Olympic stadium. The win enabled the Giallorosso to move out of the relegation zone for the first time this season.
With pressure mounting from the fans and the club leadership, a loss for Ranieri could have spelt doom for his coaching career further compounding their situation. In their last ten meetings dating back to 2005, both Roma and Inter were level on 3 wins.
Yesterday’s victory earned Ranieri a perfect record against the defending champions in 2010 and will also encourage the capital club ahead of crucial matches in Europe as well as in the league.
With Luca Toni misfiring on all accounts it was up to Mirko Vucinic’s last minute header saved his side the blushes and gave them their first victory of the season. Inter still remain top of the leader board but with more fixtures to be played today, their lead might not last that long.
Roma prepare to welcome FC Cluj to the same venue on Tuesday for ttheir matchday 2 Champions League encounter. A fortnight ago, Roma were ob the receiving end as the were beaten by German champions Bayern Munich 2-0 at the Allianz Arena.
The tide of the battle seems to have changed and Cluj should be no match for the mighty Romans. Roma were and still remain favourites to progress from Group E and they will be hoping Bayern can do the a favour by beating Basel by a resounding scoreline to help them move into second spot.
In Serie A, Roma face more tricky fixtures against Napoli, Genoa and Parma. Should they manage to collect all 9 points from these matches then, they will once again be considered as title challengers.
