Things are going from bad to worse for capital club AS Roma as their iconic captain Francesco Totti has offered to quit if it is proved that he is the reason for the club’s misfortunes this season.
Roma find themselves in the relegation zone with 5 points from 6 matches. Totti is the face of Roma. Mention the club’s name and the first thing that comes to mind is the 34 year old. Having faithfully served the club for than 21 years, it would be difficult to imagine what they club would look like without him.
“I would never allow myself to be put in a situation of privilege with respect to the other Roma players,” Totti wrote in Il Corriere dello Sport.
“Moreover as the captain of Roma I confirm that I don’t want to be this team’s problem. If whoever with the decision-making power in this club believes that I have become a problem for this club, they must say so to me, then I can make my decision because I don’t want to be a burden on anyone.
“I have always been and will always be available to this team and these colours to try and make our fans dream and to make our Roma win.”
With league action taking a break this weekend, Roma can have some rest time before tough fixtures against Genoa and Parma. It remains to be seen whether Ranieri can lift his squad from the brink of total collapse.
Fans have however stood by their club hero and many believe that Roma’s bad fortunes could just be as a result of unpreparedness on the team’s side. Much like last season, the Giallorrossi started the season in terrible form and it was only after the winter break that they found their stride.
Things have definitely changed and should Roma leave it late to make a dramatic comeback, they could live to regret it. With Inter, Milan and Juventus all looking strong, Roma have to start winning if they want to challenge for the scudetto.
