Redknapp: It Was A Night To Remember

Defending champions Inter Milan were the biggest losers on the night yesterday when they lost 3-1 to Champions League first timers Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

Last night’s results leave Tottenham top of Group A with 7 points with Inter in second spot with the same number of points but with an inferior goal difference. FC Twente are third 2 points behind Inter and Bremen in last place with only 2 points.

The Group A underdogs Tottenham have shown that they can no longer be underestimated and deserve the same the same level of respect that other group members command. I have to be honest and admit that by this stage of the competition, i was expecting the London club to be dead last in their group with no or few points.

Once again, Gareth Bale the hero for Tottenham 2 weeks ago provided a stellar performance this time providing assists for team mates Peter Crouch and Roman Pavlyuchenko.

Tottenham coach Harry Reid called it a ‘memorable night’. On the score sheet for the Nerazzurri was Samuel Eto’o who’s goal 10 minutes from time spared Benitez the blushes in his first return to England since leaving Inter.

Speaking to Sky sports, a visibly delighted Redknapp ran out of superlatives trying to describe Gareth Bale’s performance.

“Amazing, amazing.”

“They are just doing some drug testing now! The way the boy can run and run and run against a right-back who is rated by everybody as the best right-back in the world. What he has done to [Maicon] over the last two games is just unbelievable.

“He has great ability. He not only has pace but can run and run all day. He’s got the ability to cross the ball with the left foot. He’s got the ability to shoot and to dribble and to head. He’s got everything. He is also a great lad, believe you me.”

Of course Maicon did not have a good night yesterday, and a player cannot be judged based on a single performance. However, this should serve as a wake up call for Benitez. Inter will not have it easy this time round especially considering the likes of Real Madrid and Chelsea who are keen on winning the trophy.

Champions League actions continues today with other fixtures to be played, however, attention will be In Milan where AC Milan host Madrid for the return leg.
