Real Madrid failed to maintain their 10 point gap with Barcelona this weekend after they only managed to get a draw against Malaga despite playing at Santiago Bernebau and simply dominating the game especially in the second half.
However, a late free kick goal from Santi Cazorla simply destroyed Los Blancos’ effort as they only managed to score a goal on the match through Karim Benzema and couldn’t converted more of their chances.
Starting the game knowing that Barcelona already pulled down the gap back into seven points after the Blaurgrana beat Sevilla on Saturday, Madrid were as determined as ever to grab all three points against Champions League spot contenders, Malaga. Things didn’t really shape up that brilliantly for Madrid in the first half as the away team actually managed to cause some problems mostly by controlling more of the ball possession, reducing the damage that Jose Mourinho’s team usually provides at home.
However, on the counter, Madrid eventually took the lead when Cristiano Ronaldo’s cross found Benzema unmarked in the far post and the French striker simply headed the ball into Malaga’s net without any problem. The match still looked pretty tight after that goal but the home team simply stretched things out in the second period as Mesut Ozil and Kaka started to run the show, creating plenty goal scoring chances for the home team.
Unfortunately for Madrid, Willy Caballero were in a great form as he made several crucial saves that puts his side on the game until the final minute when Cazorla stunned the Bernabeu with his wonderful free kick. Los Blancos’ keeper, Iker Casillas simply couldn’t do anything to reach the ex-Villarreal player’s stunner as it was just to hot too handle for pretty much any keepers in the world, including a world champion such as Casillas.
Meanwhile, in other game that Sunday, Valencia stunned one of Spanish recently talked about club, Athletic Bilbao as Roberto Soldado netted a hat-trick to beat Marcelo Bielsa’s side comfortably. This result pretty much hold out Bilbao’s ambition in competing for the fourth place spot this season as once again they showed inability to sustain their performance week in week out.
