Gonzalo Higuaín ruled out for Real Madrid's next UEFA Champions League match

The Argentine, who is one of the top goal scorers in La Liga this season, will not be able to play on Tuesday against Belarus side BATE in UEFA’s Champions League group action.  The 20-year-old has scored 9 league goals to lead his club.

Higuaín suffered an ankle injury against Recreativo Huelva that will prevent his participation midweek.  The club released a statement today noting the injury as well as confirming that there will be an attempt for a “rapid recovery” using the latest in sport’s injury and rehabilitation techniques.

Real is attempting to secure a spot in the quarter-finals of the tournament.  Italy’s Juventus leads the group.

Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy and Italian defender Fabio Cannavaro will also miss the match versus BATE.  Van Nistelrooy is out for the entire season after suffering a severe knee injury.  If Gonzalo Higuaín misses a significant amount of time, Real Madrid will certainly need to go out and improve the front of the attack.  Who is it going to be?

David Villa, Karim Benzema, or someone else?  Let us know who you think will be the next great striker at the Santiago Bernabéu.  If I had to speculate, I could see Real making a strong push for Manchester City’s come January.
