Going into the season winning the Champions League was considered Real Madrid’s main objective. And for the sixth straight year los galiciticos failed to impress and were bumped out of the first round of the knockout stages.
And unlike the previous seasons this was supposed to be the club that gave the fans what they wanted. With the most money being spent in league history this was supposed to be the team that changed certain trends. But despite the critical additions to the squad they still came up short against an inferior Lyon team. And everyone deserves the finger pointed at them.
Manuel Pellegrini will likely become the scapegoat for the loss and who else really deserves more blame then the manager? The fact that the club was only winning 1-0 at halftime was a major reason why they lost. Higuain put a ball off of the post when the net was wide open and several times the Madrid players failed to make that critical final pass to the streaking player in the box. The score could have easily been 3-0 heading int0 halftime. And make no mistake about this club, they are extremely talented. But playing like a team takes seasons to perfect and Pellegrini is managing a club that doesn’t have that type of patience.
The loss will likely cost the coach his job down the road. Especially considering that they have already been knocked from the Coppa Del Rey. But the league title is still a potential possibility this season and the boys have shown serious improvement from a year ago. But Real Madrid isn’t the type of organization that preaches improvement. They want trophies.
And they also want Jose Mourinho’s phone number.
