Between them they have scored an amazing 74 goals. Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain have established themselves as La Liga’s ultimate strike trio after they led their side to another impressive display against Osasuna last night.
Both Higuain and Ronaldo scored twice to ensure a comfortable 5- win for Los Blancos who prepare to face APOEL in a return leg Champions League quarter final fixture on Wednesday. Speaking after the match, Ronaldo told press that the win was a huge boost to their title campaign.
“I play under the illusion that we will win the title,” he said.
“We are well situated in the table. There are eight games remaining and we must have the illusion that we will win.”
The match also saw Argentine international Gonzalo Higuain score his 100th goal for Madrid. Higuain who joined Madrid from River Plate in 2007 has gone on to make 210 appearances for Real scoring 101 goals (a very good record if you ask me).
Meanwhile, Real Madrid’s arch rivals Barcelona were also winners on the night thanks to goals from Iniesta and Messi as they beat high flyers Athletic Bilbao 2-0 at the Nou Camp.
Speaking after the match, a happy Jose Mourinho praised his fringe players form their good performance.
“I like the manner in which each player responds to my call,” Mourinho said.
“Today was not an easy match. Granero and Albiol have not played much, but responded very well.”
So wins for both Madrid and Barcelona have boosted their confidence ahead of a potentially decisive Champions League fixtures. In fact of all the big European teams featuring this week in the tournament, Milan are the only one’s who did not record a victory in their league match.
The Rossoneri were held to a 1-1 draw by Catania on Saturday night to raise a few concerns over whether they will be able to stop Barca when then the pair meets at the Nou Camp on Wednesday.
Chelsea and Bayern Munich also notched up wins in their respective leagues which no doubt will enhance their chances of making it to the semi’s of the tournament.
