AS Roma suffered one of their worst home defeats when they were beaten by Swiss club FC Basel 3-1 at the Stadio Olimpico in their Group E champions League fixture last night.
Roma has not been having the best of starts this season and this loss further compounds the pressure on coach Claudio Ranieri. Speaking after the match, Ranieri said that his side still needs to do more work if they are to return to the form they displayed at the beginning of the year.
“We need to improve, as the approach to the match was not the same as the one against Genoa,” Ranieri told Sky after the match. “Basel created few chances, but finished them off, while we could not capitalize on all our chances.
“We weren’t aggressive enough and played too many long balls. We are doing good things, but more chances needed to be created.
“Our loss does not depend on the small crowd at the stadium,” he said. “In the Champions League, players need to have the right motivation. All the team lacks is continuity and the determination to obtain the right results.
“We are all disappointed but we must keep on believing in ourselves and the work we are doing,”
In every league there are slow starters and there are the surprise packages. Roma might be considered as one of the slow starters. However, things
might not turn out good for the Giallorossi if they continue in such fashion.
With only 3 representatives in the competition this year, Italian clubs are in danger of not making it to the knock out stages of the competition. Both Roma and Milan lost leaving Inter with the huge responsibility of carrying the countries flag high on match day 3 of tournament.
It remains to be seen how Ranieri will fashion his side for their upcoming league encounters after another poor performance.
