Despite the team president’s assurance that he will remain manager, Rafa Benitez of Inter needs to win immediately if he hopes to save his job before the end of this season. The new Inter coach, that had the challenge of taking over a historic treble winning club, has struggled so far in Serie A andhis club now has fallen 9 points behind first place AC Milan and the deficit might be too much for the defending champs to overcome.
Rafa was brought in this off season under difficult circumstances. The first year coach had the stressful scenario of replacing the world’s most popular coach following an awkward exit from Liverpool last season. But during his short reign as manager, Inter has yet to really fulfill any of their preseason goals and recently the club’s offense has looked mediocre at best. The last time Inter scored multiple goals in one match was on September 22nd against Brescia in a 4-0 victory. 6 different teams in Serie A have currently scored more goals then last year’s champs and in the last two months Inter has only scored 6 goals in 8 matches. Barcelona scored 8 goals this weekend in 1 match.
Inter’s woes have existed for a variety of reasons and considering the 3 game deficit they currently face, it might be too last to overcome the slow start this season. The club has struggled with fitness this season, along with a new regime, and many of the players that were superb last season (Sneijder and Milito) have looked worn out and ordinary this season.
It’s not too late for the club to turn it all around, but they did just loseto Chievo Verona last weekend and Eto’o could likely see some suspension time due to a headbutt. So times are tough for 6th place Inter right now and a coaching change is never an out of style move in modern day football.
I still think if it happens it will not go down until near the end of the season.
