Brazilian legend Edson Arantes do Nascimento otherwise know as Pele has refuted claims that Argentine wonder boy Lionel Messi is the world’s greatest player. According to Pele, Messi must first score 1000 career goals to have the pleasure of being debated as one of the greatest players to have ever lived. However, considering Lio’s age and the form he has had these past 2 years, Messi might not be too far off from earning that title.
Pele does have a point. As long as there is no one who can match or better his feat of scoring 1000 goals, then he will forever remain the greatest player in the world.
“They are always trying to compare someone to Pele, I always joke with my Argentine friends that they must first choose who is the best player from Argentina. Then, when one of them scores a thousand goals, then we can start talking.”
If Argentinians themselves cannot decide who between Messi and Marodona is the best player then they cannot dare try and compare any of the two to Pele. Brazil for instance, has had many stars who have impressed over the years. Garrincha, Zico, Socrates, Gilmar and recently, Romario, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Kaka, Adriano, Robinho are all players of exceptionable abilities and yet with all the talents these people possess, none has ever been compared to Pele.
Messi is a great player and if he can win the world cup with Argentina, one debate would have been settled. However, that is a task easier said than done. My advise to Messi would be for him to focus on each game and forget about earning titles. May be this way Lio could find himself nearer to Pele’s record.
