It was not a good day for many of Europe’s big teams on Saturday as a number of them received shocking results that left many of their fans stunned beyond words. From Italy to Spain to Germany and England, the big boys were humbled beyond their wildest imaginations.
One result that really surprised and still makes me laugh is, Cagliari’s demolition of AS Roma. I mean losing by one or even two goals is understandable, but losing 5-1 to Cagliari is a disgrace. A disgrace to the Giallorosso faithful but a delight for many of their rival fans.
Another was Milan’s 2-0 loss to Cesena. With all their superstars, the Rossoneri’s loss is definitely the anti climax in their upward curve. The fans silence speaks volumes as they prepare to face Auxerre in their opening Champions League fixture this Wednesday at the San Siro.
The story was the same in Spain as champions Barcelona were stunned 2-0 by newly promoted Hercules. Hercules not only picked up three vitals points, but they can also pride themselves in accomplishing a feat that not too many teams can match-beating the Catalans at the Nou Camp.
In the EPL, Manchester United fans were robbed of a very important victory with just minutes left in the game. Settling for a 3-3 draw with Everton, Sir Alex and his troops are not having the best of opening seasons.
In Germany, title holders Bayern Munich were held to barren draw by fierce rivals Weder Bremen. Bremen also accomplished a rare feat of being the only team in Bundesliga to make it 5 years without dropping points in Bayern’s infamous Allianz Arena. Former champions Wolfsburg also lost 2-0 to Borussia Dortmund.
A common excuse we are all bound to hear is its still early days in the league. Yeah, i would like to say that for of the losing teams but a couple of weeks back when the European Season got underway with impressive wins from the same sides, most of their fans were already talking of clean sweeps in their respective leagues. How first things change.
