2009 MLS Season Review: Series Preview

The 2009 MLS Season was a success. Yes, I said it, and I believe it too. After all, attendance stayed at a nice level (over 16k per game for the 3rd straight season), and the level of play also kept fans satisfied. In the end, an upstart bunch of perpetual losers, RSL, overcame great odds (and their losing record) to hoist the MLS Cup. I loved it.

But I also loved what I saw out of almost every other team in the league (NYRB excluded). Some great teams of late continued to look strong, some incessant losers made great runs to finish above water, and some new kids on the block showed up and surprised the living schmid out of everyone. If you like storylines, 2009 certainly had them.

Until 2010 begins, I will be taking you through each team and providing you with a review of their season. Now, I lack the time and patience to make this a thorough undertaking, so this series will focus on just three questions: (1) did the squad succeed in 2009, (2) who were the side’s stellar players, and (3) which stats best symbolize the team’s season.

So, please come back to STO over the next month as we breakdown each MLS squad’s 2009 season and try to shed a little light on why they ended up where they did. This series will conclude our coverage of MLS in 2009, but please do not worry. We will be back in 2010 to continue to provide you with the best MLS news, insight, and commentary on these here interwebs.
